Kit Harington talks about the Jon Snow Season Finale

If you haven’t already seen the season finale from Game of Thrones Season 5, stop reading right now and go and watch it.  Seriously, why are you even here if you aren’t caught up with the show anyway?  With that out of the way, the season finale was packed full of some serious shockers, but there was one that book readers were expecting (and dreading) and it happened.

Jon Snow was betrayed by the members of the Nights Watch, and stabbed to death in the snow.  Everyone saw it, but almost no one wants to accept it.  There are conspiracy theories floating around that involve everything from Melisandre to Ghost and even the White Walkers.

Unlike the book Winds of Winter, which we have been waiting on for almost 5 years and has kept us in limbo about whether Jon Snow is actually dead, the show has some constraints.  Namely if Kit Harington starts filming for Season 6, which should start shortly.

Kit Harington himself had this to say: ” If anything in the future is not like that, then I don’t know about it – it’s only in David and Dan and George’s heads. But I’ve been told I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m not coming back next season. So that’s all I can tell you, really.”

In another follow-up interview in NYDN he expounded on his final scene

What he wants for the audience reaction: “I hope it’s a real shock and a heartbreak, I really hope it is. It’s like Joffrey’s death or the Red Wedding. It’s a scene that we want to have that kind of impact; I found it to be really disturbing to shoot.”
Jon Snow was like Ned Stark? “Jon was very much like his father, very withheld. Very kind of, in the Old World sense, what a man should be.”
How Jon died: “I had wanted it to be a beautiful death, a release. But the way it unfolded, it was a huge betrayal and a gruesome death. It was an abrupt and brutal finish with no absolutely no peace for Jon in the end. He dies sad understanding that the last person to stab him is Olly, his steward…Jon had taken him under his wing and mentored the boy, but he forgets that this boy’s family has been murdered by wildlings. There’s a real loneliness at the end for Jon Snow. His greatest fault lies in that fact, that while he’s trying to deal with the horror headed in their direction, he’s neglected to see the politics around him. He was looking too much at the big picture and not paying enough attention to the small one — and that’s what got him killed.”
Jon Snow is really dead: “I’m quite dead. It’s over for Jon Snow — at the very least, he gets to join his family and kin and leave this terrible world behind.”
Why Jon died: “He makes the humanitarian choice. And just like his father, the moral choice gets him killed.”

When the Game of Thrones producers and writers were asked about Jon Snow’s fate, they had this to say:

When asked point-blank of Snow is firmly gone—as in, is actor Kit Harington released from his Thrones contract?—showrunner Dan Weiss told EW, “Dead is dead.”

“We would hope that after seeing the scene and the way it’s shot that the answer to that will be unambiguous in the minds of the people watching it,” Weiss explained. “It should be pretty clear what happens in by the time you’re done seeing that scene. It’s not an, ‘Oh what just happened scene?’
”
